Milton & Locke thought Catholics didn't deserve free speech. Mill thought "immature" (i.e. non whites & working class) didn't deserve free speech. So this is completely wrong on classical liberal position.https://twitter.com/JonathanMerritt/status/962446842062663681 …

Isn't it possible many self-described classical liberals have read the texts, seen and recognized the contradictions or blind spots, and simply extend the concepts to cover groups and situations the original authors didn't, rather than throwing out the whole tradition?

And isn't that what those who identify with any political tradition end up doing? Any single theorist is going to have contradictions or blind spots, which is only compounded when multiple theorists are grouped together in a "tradition."

People make mistakes. They're not infallible. My boy Jefferson owned slaves and had relations with one, which would still be rape. My other boy Hugo Black was in the KKK and supported the internment of Japanese-Americans. And my other boy Andy Johnson set civil rights back 100yrs

I won't even get into Ayn Rand. Point is even our idols have prolly done some twisted shit. Everyone has skeletons. Liking someone's position on Y doesn't mean we agree with them A-Z or think them a saint.
