Classical liberalism values free speech as a great good. It never seeks to shame, shun, or silence another. It works to enable a marketplace of free thought where, it believes, the best ideas will prevail. If you refuse to hear or dialogue with a conservative, you aren’t liberal.

Thanks. I'm pretty sure I am differently remembering the same passage from the same book. I thought he said liberty was only for the mature. Liberty involves not just speaking but also acting.

Mill said some countries (including India) are like children & must be taken care of not allowed liberty (that was his day job). I don't think this means he thought they shouldn't be allowed to *say* what they thought, but her sure did believe in the Raj (being in charge of it).
