Milton & Locke thought Catholics didn't deserve free speech. Mill thought "immature" (i.e. non whites & working class) didn't deserve free speech. So this is completely wrong on classical liberal position.https://twitter.com/JonathanMerritt/status/962446842062663681 …

Classical liberalism values free speech as a great good. It never seeks to shame, shun, or silence another. It works to enable a marketplace of free thought where, it believes, the best ideas will prevail. If you refuse to hear or dialogue with a conservative, you aren’t liberal.

People who call themselves "classical liberals" often seem not to have read any works in the classical liberal tradition.

Uh, so free speech shouldn't apply to conservatives and we should abandon the principles of liberalism? What exactly is your point?

You can make the case that there is something called "classical liberalism" which takes the idea of a limited government to protect property (Locke) and combines it the a defense of liberty (Mill) but usually adds rights to the equation (Locke, again).

It's a bit disingenuous to say X particular classical liberal wasn't consistent about Y therefore the the classical liberal position on Y is illiberal.

No, my position is people are concocting a fake tradition based on what they think classical liberals should have believed, rather than what they in fact did believe.

taking a political philosophy class and read a line from Locke where he repeatedly emphasizes /harmless/ religious belief must be tolerated, and then explicitly discounts Catholicism. it was wild
