People who call themselves "classical liberals" often seem not to have read any works in the classical liberal tradition.

Free speech is an Enlightenment value, not one which is constrained by polarity.
-
If you think both poles support the Enlightenment, then you must live on a different planet than I do. I suspect you haven't been listening to the right wing of the GOP any more than Mr Martinez has.

Milton and Locke are pre or proto-liberals -- important to the liberal tradition but not liberals. Mill is definitely a liberal but not a rights based liberal.
-
Hobbes is also a very important contributor to that tradition -- but he sure as heck isn't a liberal. But he creates intellectual "tools" ,as it were, helpful to the liberal tradition.

hit us with a cite for that Mill
-
He also thought that people of more 'intelligence' by which he meant qualifications (and therefore generally upper class people) should get more votes http://www.cyberpat.com/shirlsite/essays/mill.html …

also weird that free speech was an add-on to the US Constitution, ie it wasn't considered important enough for the main document? dunno the historical context for that to my chagrin
-
Actually, before the US Constitution many state constitutions already enshrined free speech
