Except Stephens is correct. It would be exceptionally rare for a pedophiliac to molest a single time (and Soon Yi was 19 when their affair began)https://twitter.com/gregmitch/status/962182008939171840 …

I think that's just factually wrong. Psychologists who study pedophilia say that many of them don't act on their impulses, let alone become serial abusers:https://twitter.com/briandavidearp/status/929162824018006016 …

Huh? Isn’t the accusation against Allen that he DID act on those desires, not suppress them?

Right, but there's no reason to think that a pedophile has to be a serial abuser rather than someone who doesn't act or acts only once. These are all possibilities.

No, that’s not right. It would be very unusual for someone with a pedophilia disorder to act on it only once. That quote from Earp doesn’t say what you’re trying to argue

I'll try to find my source for this, but I'm pretty sure that the spectrum isn't never acts and serial abuser. One time acts or one victim also occurs.

I did some reporting on this for a piece I put aside, but per the experts I interviewed, not all people who sexually abuse children are pedophiles. Some are simply abusers whose behavior takes that form.

Yes, that's right. Child abuse (the act) needs to be distinguished from pedophilia (the inclination). Obviously some overlap but not same thing.

Don't have access to my notes right now but I wish these conversations were more research informed. This was one of the people I spoke to: http://cepp.com/the-center-for-sex-offender-management-csom-names-dr-kurt-bumby-as-new-director/ …

Yeah, I think it would be best if there were a researched or expert response to Stephens. Just based on my reading, column seems off-base in assumptions it makes
