      1. Mike Pence is in Seoul for the Olympics & a rift between USA & South is widening. South wants to use events as bridge to diplomacy with North, Trump administration doesn't.

      2. There's a lot of conventional foreign policy types who think this is a bad thing (ally drifting away from USA, loss of American power etc.). But is it really?

      3. The origins of the rift are in fact Trump administration quite frankly values American lives much more than Korean or Japanese ones. Willing to terrifying war to reduce chance North Korea can bomb USA.

      4. CIA director Mike Pompeo: “this administration is prepared to do what it takes to ensure that people in Los Angeles and Denver and New York aren’t held at risk from Kim Jong-un having a nuclear weapon.” What it takes = countless dead Asians.

      5. Leaving aside the morality of the Trump position, why should South Koreans accept a strategy where they will die to marginally increase safety of Americans?

      6. Given Trump administrations stated disregard for their lives, South Korea perfectly justified in wanting to move out of USA orbit. And this could lead to a genuine diplomatic resolution:https://newrepublic.com/article/147004/madman-accidentally-bring-peace-korean-peninsula …

The only rational geopolitical position for other nations is quietly forming failsafe alliances to defend themselves against American aggression. There can be little doubt now that when WW3 comes, we'll be the bad guys.

South Korea and US are drifting apart because they don’t want to deepen cooperation with Japanese and Australian militaries and other regional allies to check NK and China.

I've often thought that Trump will do rapidly and messily what Obama tried to do slowly and carefully: reduce America's centrality to world order.

But it's not just the Trump administration! Like many things it's most of the GOP. The alleged reasonable Lindsey Graham has been talking very casually about the possiblity of war in Korea, even nuclear exchanges, with the better there than here line.

Plus, the south was only firmly placed IN the US orbit by a brutal military occupation, a war that can only be described as genocidal, and decades of murderous dictatorships whose principal base of support was in Washington.

No it won't. As long as the two Koreas have fundamentally different political systems, they'll inevitably see each other as existential threats.
