In 2013 Carter Page described himself as an adviser to the Kremlin. In 2016 he was an adviser to the Trump campaign. Perhaps this can be described as a lateral promotion.

No-- the most plausible explanation was, doomed or not, every serious GOP foreign policy expert was smart enough to separate themselves from Trump because of Trump's many ethical problems. And his constant lying. No one like how he boasted about being pals & respecting Vlad Putin

GOP had been the party of, "Tear Down This Wall." Trump was more like "Let's palsy welsy with Putin! Let's get Russia to release more Hillary emails!" All serious GOP foreign policy experts knew what Trump was getting at, and how easy it would be for Putin to compromise him.

I'm sick of the 'politically ignorant & inept' excuse. The Trumps have run various con games/criminal enterprises for decades. That takes some skill. For a man who claims to value loyalty above all else, he sure did expect a lot from 'strangers'.

Maybe it was sinister insofar as Kremlin wanted him there, as in "make this guy one of your foreign policy advisors."
