There's a big disjunction between academic historians & pundits on this. Hofstadter's consensus history continues to serve elite needs even when under scholarly challenge.
-
The frustrating thing about pundits citing Hofstadter is that they generally seem not to have read anything else written on the topic in the last 50 years. (In some cases, they seem not to have actually read Hofstadter either.)

Jesus. The nauseating laziness of this take. Hemingway & Steinbeck were both important, relevant, & celebrated voices of their time. Doesn't make either of them *wrong* or *right* The whole point of READING is not depending on one book, or one author, to answer all questions.

I think American Political Tradition is a great book, especially chapter on Calhoun.Other books I'd supplement by reading his critics (i.e. Age of Reform with Goodwyn)

We read all of APT, only non-textbook reading in the class, framed as The American Historian.
