I remember a zillion centrist pundits telling me "no blood for oil" is a simplistic slogan because USA foreign policy more complex than just resource plunder. https://twitter.com/JustinElliott/status/956593924654751744 …

Or the centrist pundits who are now lamenting how Trump has supposedly abandoned the American tradition of spreading democracy and human rights around the world.

only more complex in that there's also a bunch of racism involved in the plunder

To understand American foreign policy, all you have to do is look at Woodrow Wilson's 14 Points. And, unquestionably, economic interests are central to our policy. People may reject the language, but the argument is sound.

Jethro needs to build the pipelines and get Canadian oil to market. But it seems some pundits prefer bloody oil over dirty. @JustinTrudeau

Actually, this memo suggests they were only just figuring out the resource plunder angle. So bizarre. Maybe a bit more complex?

Unsure of Klare thesis that the US was trying to get control of a scarce resource to fuel its own industries. Other things mattered, investment of oil rents and their expenditure on US weapons and infrastructure, recycling of petrodollars in US rather than rivals' interests
