I think there's a stylistic shift as well which you're eliding. While three of the most important New Wave writers (Russ, Delany, Disch) were gay, feminist, and therefore fit your concept of experiencing other culture, others (Moorcock, Aldiss, Zelazny) did not. 1/2

But all were affected by the 50s and 60s counterculture and were stylistically interesting, bringing literary and poetic techniques into mainstream SFF.
