I think economic bad times are exacerbating and to the degree austerity and Neoliberalism cause it, I’d agree. But economic change which causes perceived loss of status is at least as important. For example

Where economic dynamism is an urban/suburban phenomenon and Trump Country is stagnant somewhat explains the “precondition “ creation for the rise of Trumpism. But Republicans have race baited since 1965. The racism was always there.

This would be more convincing if Merkel’s austerity measures had actually hurt Germany. They didn’t. In 2017 Germans were happier w their economic situation than at any point since the reunification. Unemployment is at a record low. Austerity hurt other EU countries, not Germany
