Agreed. Deep State is a useful concept which has been corrupted by nutbars. I now default to military-industrial complex or permanent bureaucracy.https://twitter.com/normative/status/956010617751658497 …

Frustratingly, the “deep state” is, indeed, currently property of conspiracy nuts, but it’s also adjacent to a perfectly legitimate concept that describes a real thing: a semi-permanent security bureaucracy with its own interests. https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2376272 … https://twitter.com/rwpusa/status/956008996242063360 …

The idea of a "deep state" is simply stupid. The president & Congress have the power to change/oversee the existence, mission, & programs of all agencies. Federal workers expect to serve whoever is president. The idea that they have separate agendas is insulting, frankly.

They are very aware that they working on behalf of taxpayers. It's like you all think they aren't human or citizens or something.

the two concepts are hard to distinguish (Greenwald camps out on Carlson's Fox show), maybe they are both nuts? I.e. conspiratorial descriptions of democratic institutions.

Military-industrial complex and permanent bureaucracy are two very different things. The Iron Law of Oligarchy applies in all organizations, not just govt, but we need to distinguish between nefarious consequences [military-industrial] and mere self-seeking job expansion.

permanent bureaucracy is a good default. for me, military-industrial complex has very different meaning like the military part feeding much of $700,000,000,000 in taxpayer dollars to the industrial part for enrichment of shareholders.

One problem in the US is too many political appointments to position that should be held by the civil service.

I always felt the deep state was an obvious concept but was afraid to use it because of all the loons, then I had a professor who casually mentioned it all the time. I don't see how you can argue against it

When I studied law, and public policy, it was just called “bureaucratic inertia” and was considered a good thing, because it ameliorated shocks to the system caused by changes in the executive.
