Next time they’ll find something else to weaponize. No one believed Dems were blocking CHIP. Dems got skittish and suckered in to thinking the GOP was doing them a favor when in fact no one opposes it

Doesn't that speak to the limits of the leverage the Dems have as the minority party?

Just that as the majority party (and also as government haters) GOP can always use budgets to create hostages to pressure Dems. Makes it hard to win fights.

I agree that definitely happens.. I just don't think people felt Dems were being obstructionist. Dems may have felt pressure - but what kind of pressure is it? Seems like a lot of this is people worrying Dems may be blamed later - even with all these reports about Miller/Kelly

Go tell nine million of the most vulnerable people in America who probably permanently lost their only medical network through expanded community health center funding that this was a good deal for them.

Oh, it's a shitty deal, no question. I'm trying to figure out how much leverage Dems might have had (and sounds like they should make the health care clawback an issue)

Several days ago, something like 48% of Americans were polled as blaming Republicans for the shutdown (compared to 28% blaming Democrats). I just heard that number was up to 60% over the weekend (but those polls obviously won't drop now). Wasted opportunity on a winning issue.
