2. There's two problems with Hofstadter on populism: characterization of historical populism & genealogy he creates linking populism with radical right (McCarthy etc.).

3. On historical populism, Hofstadter's characterization of it as particularly intolerant, conspiracy prone, & backward looking challenged by host of subsequent historians, notably Lawrence Goodwyn.

4. Hofstadter & his followers also do disservice by applying "populist" label to McCarthyism, New Right, Trumpism, etc: all movements that crucially depend on elite GOP & business class support.

5. Right-wing authoritarianism is a politics of aggrieved privilege, of elites & high-caste people who feel under siege. Calling it populist obscures that fact.

I've felt for a long time that 'populist' seems to a euphemism for 'fascist'. I did not realize until now that this went back to Hofstadter.
