Ultimately, unless we’re going to have complete open door immigration, there needs to be some mechanism to decide who gets in and who doesn’t. The question then becomes finding the least bad such mechanism.

I grew up in Ireland in the 80's and 90's and the large Irish-American presence in US Govt (O'Neill, Morrison) together w closed Eastern Europe and Asia meant Ireland benefited greatly from the 'lottery'. Ireland's free college meant we had an advantage once that ended.

There can be legitimate reasons for balancing family reunification with skills. Trump&the GOP aren't making. Allowing new comers to bring family too gives people who have been struggling a support network.
