Trump can spew all the poison he wants about immigrants and other countries, but when you can't get your own party to appropriate money for the thousands and thousands of border guards you promised, people will ignore the talk and make their move.https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/10/us/border-crossings-trump-effect.html?emc=edit_th_20180111&nl=todaysheadlines&nlid=53724764 …

Do you think that, leaving policy aside, there's no impact in having a president repeatedly say racist things and his party repeatedly defending him on it?

It's definitely had an impact: the public is now more supportive of immigration than they've been since 2005. https://www.wsj.com/articles/americans-back-immigration-and-trade-at-record-levels-1493092861?mg=id-wsj … The effect of Trump's election was that the public became more opposed to the idea of a travel ban. https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/wp/2017/02/07/a-new-poll-shows-a-surprisingly-big-public-swing-against-trumps-muslim-ban/?utm_term=.e48486de1515 …

Gallup also showed that between July 2016 and July 2017 there was a six-point swing in favor of increased immigration over decreased immigration.pic.twitter.com/YmsmdvODPE

On this, as in other matters, effect of public opinion gets mediated by parties. If public is more pro-immigrant but GOP less, then pro-immigrant policies less likely.

So now, having been shown that the effect of Trump's speech on the public opinion is the opposite of what you assumed, you want to shift the discussion back to policies.

My initial comment was "impact in having a president repeatedly say racist things & his party repeatedly defending him on it." The impact is in the fusion of Trump with party.

You're all over the map. Less than 10 minutes ago, you characterized my claim as being one about the impact of presidential speech (just speech, not policy) on the lives of people of color. Now you say what you were commenting on was impact of that speech on his fusion w/party?pic.twitter.com/94H3hAUuSN

I'm pretty sure if I were a Haitian-American I would feel bad if 1) POTUS called my native country a "shithole" & 2) GOP provided him cover and didn't criticize him. Or is that impossible to believe?
