In some ways this article didn't shock me. Catholic Orthodoxy really starts with radically different assumptions than the liberal foundation of most Western democracies. I find it very wrong but not incomprehensible given the way they think. The boy's soul was at stake.

It's been almost 20 years since the "End of Democracy?" brouhaha. Guess the editors thought it was time for another.

I'm actually pleased to have this conversation right now. It forces folks like Dreher and Douthat to answer some uncomfortable questions (or at least draw uncomfortable distinctions), and it requires liberals to confront just how historically contingent their worldview is.
