The fall of Bannon is in part a function of his hubris and lack of impulse control. But there was also a sound political analysis at work: he saw the wreck that Trumpism is becoming & he decided to hop off the train.

It is questionable whether Bannon of all people could free himself from Trumpism, given their history, but it makes sense to try. But in this effort, Bannon was a premature anti-Trumpist.

The GOP, including its far right, still calculates that breaking with Trump will do them more damage than good, & so they turned on Bannon with a vengance. He had become a general without an army.

But the shortsightedness of GOP can only do them more harm when the day of reckoning comes. None of current leadership will be credibly able to put distance between themselves & Trump. And neither will Bannon...
