Unfortunately, the pro-American lobbies in Japan and South Korea are exceptionally powerful and regressive, Korea's more than anything. These are hardcore authoritarians who supported all of the abuses of the military dictatorship.

Being raised in a culture like that, you would basically be yelled at and beaten up by various people more than twice your age with slogans of filial piety and social harmony drilled into your head. Not much different from North Korea.
