I wonder what you actually knew about the Sherrod incident this morning when you called Andrew a racist. (I get that you since Googled it.)https://twitter.com/heerjeet/status/949034946592518145 …

Sorry, my mistake, I was conflating Breitbart's general patronage of O'Keefe with the Sherrod incidence. Both were bad. I stand corrected.

i was fuzzy on details about something that happened 8 years ago but stand by main claim: Breitbart was a racist. You should address facts here:http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/frame_game/2010/07/amen_canard.html …

I thought Andrew Breitbart's behavior in the Shirley Sherrod incident was generally disgraceful (Saletan's account is entirely accurate), but IMO it's entirely plausible that the motivation was political, not racial.

He was intentionally trying to create a false narrative of white victimhood. The only defense is that he was not *racist per se* merely attempting to *stoke racial resentment* for a political end. That's... not great.

I agree. Whether or not Breitbart was personally prejudiced, the Sherrod affair sure looked to me like it was meant to exploit other people's prejudices. That & some similar but smaller events in 2010 changed the way I viewed several figures on the right.

Whether a political figure is personally racist is far less important than whether they try to stoke racial prejudice or not. Personal belief less salient than actions.

I just re-read the piece I wrote on the Sherrod story in 2010 (which ended up not running anywhere -- I wrote it for Real Clear Politics but they felt they'd already run too much on the story, and this was in pre-Medium days). A bit of context:

Breitbart posted the Sherrod video after the NAACP passed a resolution demanding that the Tea Party disavow the racists in its ranks. To him, this was "fighting back" with "well, how about these racists in the ranks of the NAACP." So I'm sure he saw it as "they attacked first."

Case in point; George Wallace was a racial liberal (by Alabama standards) until it cost him votes, then whoa, Nelly. What he "really thought" is a footnote, and arguably if he knowingly sold out, that's worse.

Though in his case, what really fascinates me was his ability to remake himself yet again, to the point where he started winning the black vote in the '80s.
