1. It's possible to believe that Bannon is an epic bullshit artist and still find his comments to Wolff to be newsworthy. https://twitter.com/mattyglesias/status/948596248294182912 …

3. Bannon made those comments to Wolff willingly, not under duress. So he knew they would come out. We have to assume he wanted them out there.

4. Why would Bannon make statements that would hurt him not just with Trump but also Trump's base (which Bannon needs for future candidates he supports)?

5. One possible explanation is that Bannon is just, on some level, nuts. A nihilist who wants to burn it all down. A natural hobo who wants to lose all future employment.

6. Or maybe when Bannon talks it's the coke or the meth speaking.

8. This is an interesting possibility. Suggests that Bannon is preparing for a post-Trump future even as GOP establishment ties itself to Trump:https://twitter.com/MonsieurBobo/status/948698959739994112 …

9. Bannon was bullish on Trump in 2016 when GOP establishment was bearish. Now the situation is reversed. Open question who is right this time.

10. So I think the real question isn't whether Bannon is accurate here or not. The real news is Trump's former campaign CEO thinks Trump is toast.

Remember that as a quasi-journalist, Bannon is probably familiar with NY Times v. Sullivan. Allegations about public figures like Kushner and Manafort must be free of malice (knowing falsity or reckless disregard of falsity) to avoid defamation liability. Same for Wolff. 1/2

Book and quotes in it were probably lawyer-vetted for defamation risks. So, if Bannon is making assertions about money-laundering and Wolff is printing them, it's unlikely they're completely unfounded.
