I know nuance can be hard on twitter, but I'd like to see fewer discussions of Trump, Trumpism, and the far right of either the "total break with American traditions" or "''twas ever thus" varieties.

It doesn't seem hard to note the ways Trump (and our/his political moment) is different from the past and the ways in which things weren't hunky dory until him.

My preferred formulation is Trump has repurposed heritage of American authoritarian racism (Nixon, Wallace etc) for post-modern age.

That's a good way to put it. I'd also say that the hollowing out of civil society and institutions have made us uniquely vulnerable.
