It's weird, like there's been this massive propaganda thing aimed at probably some of the worst media out there. Not just counterpunch, but there's a straight line to all sorts of alternative media. I think the idea is that you can launder stories that way.

Like when you're doing "pickup" days, it's not to uncommon to start browsing weird media or click-bait for things you can repurpose into "Real news." Well seeded propaganda hits both that "interesting and unique" itch. It'll make you cover a minor story because of a nifty angle.
