I wouldn't rely on Hofstadter without looking at his major critics (Michael Rogin, Lawrence Goodwyn & vast literature on populism).

I don't rely on any historian...I just take the pieces that remind me of modern things, and screenshot them! :-)

Danger here is Hofstadter's description of radical right is superficially plausible but series students of subject (not just historians but political scientists) have strongly challenged.

You mean his description of "pseudo-conservatives", or the "paranoid style"?

Both. Michael Rogin's "Intellectuals and McCarthyism" has some good criticism. In a more popular vein, @notjessewalker's book on conspiracy theories also good.

But Hofstadter is great for screenshots. He was such a fantastic stylist.

In a similar vein, I think John Higham is a great moralist, but a flawed historian.

I'm sure all historians are flawed. I'll read more contemporary accounts of the things Higham writes about, but I wanted to start with a historian whose attitudes are less shaped by the same influences that shaped my own.

Here’s what I mean about Higham. There actually were schemes to organize German-Americans in military operations against Canada during WWI. There were German-Americans who openly rejoiced over the sinking of American ships. Wacht am Rhein is a provocative song. I could go on.pic.twitter.com/pVIC2dLMqG

Well, I'd say anti-German hysteria in World War I was wildly out of proportion to any threat German-Americans posed.

The paranoid style remains a great and insightful essay on political ideas. It just doesn’t capture the much wider reasons wild right wing ideas got laundered or mobilized by totally non-paranoid politicians and voters.

My criticism is the false confidence Higham instills. For example, if you can discount criticism of the movement to embargo arms to the Allies as nativist hysteria with the sole evidence that it looks like the way nativist minds always, always work, you won’t understand 1917. 1/pic.twitter.com/pZuYQUPRb1

There’s ample archival evidence the German Embassy heavily funded the embargo movement. Do I think that justified wartime repression? Absolutely not. But it’s important in understanding the total collapse of German-American political power and the passage of the Espionage Act 2/
