Not sure I’d agree that the Marvel Universe worked best in the 1960s. Great comics, of course, but I’d say the heyday of the Marvel Universe as shared universe begins with the Kree-Skrull War in 1971.

I’d say that the systematization of the MU was a late-70s/80s thing, as editors and writers started getting concerned with tending the garden over building it.
