I've never liked the term either. It gives energy to the charge of being a slut and seeks to defends women from it at the same time, leading to a situation where women call each other and themselves sluts when no one else did so explicitly.

Isn't it partly abt decoupling "slutty actions" from *being* a slut, like as an identity. Like how people are saying you should say "enslaved person" vs. "slave." It wouldn't have occurred to me that saying someone was "slut shaming" someone is equivalent to calling them a slut.
