That was a major plot point in ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN when they fucked up the story verification
in fact, in the movie version of All The President's Men, Woodstein's big error on testimony regarding who controlled the slush fund is the basis for their huge moment of self doubt (they nearly resign) before they redouble their efforts after ben bradlee backs them up.
But there wasn't so damned much OF it, and it didn't have such fast legs. We sat down to the 6 o'clock news, and watched it. We unfolded a newspaper and read it over coffee. We joined groups, or not. That was "engaged". Weirdly calm in retrospective context.
