Good review, although I think Kirby's MM is darker than you suggest. MM & Barda are marked by their hellish childhood.

Yes, and the flashbacks to Scott's childhood are some of the best parts of the series. But he and Barda rarely ever dwell on it -- it's an instead an excuse to push forward, not look back

Fair enough. Kirby preferred to show character through action rather than introspection. MM's constant courtship of death is the real proof Apokolips childhood never left him.

Very good point, but he's using those skills to thwart Darkseid's minions -- again moving in positive direction versus being consumed by anguish and hatred.
