      1. Last night was a watershed. Imagine if Gillespie had won. Trumpization of GOP would have accelerated rapidly.

      2. Gillespie was a test case: could a mainstream Republican run as a Trumpist & win. The answer, thankfully, is no.

      3. The big question about Trump was always; is he a harbinger of the future or a sui generis novelty act?

          4. Trump might not be Elvis or the Beatles, a transformative figure who remakes the landscape. He might be the "Monster Mash" - a one shot hit.

          5. Gillespie's Trumpism Without Trump failed. That's a hopeful sign for future politics! My thoughts here:https://newrepublic.com/article/145726/trumpism-without-trump-doesnt-work …

Think about the perfect storm of events that congregated at the same time in 2016 in order for Trump to *barely* win that election by a razor thin electoral margin of 77K votes spread out over 3 key states.

Trumpism, like Trump's candidacy, has always been inflated and subconsciously propped up by a msm looking for a sensation. Turns out that voters arent as impressed by it.

We cannot understate just how powerful the propaganda role of "The Apprentice" in building the case for Trump. An entire decade of a top rated TV show fusing money fetish, movie star iconography, and "power" framing. That's what Trump had that no other candidate will have.

Trump's a catalyst for change--good or bad/progressive or retrograde was and still is the question. Can the left mobilize fast enough to neutralize & reverse the damage his admin is doing?

he is a protest against politics as usual. Like shooting yourself in the foot because you don't like where you walk. His supporters will learn, but slowly.
