For that matter, what kind of people name their child "Ta-Nehisi" when they have regular English names? I guess that now I know.

For that matter, why to French-Canadians take names like Jacques & Michel when good English names like James and Michael are available?

Major difference between a made-up tradition and a genuine one. It's as if I gave my kids Irish names because I had a few Irish ancestors.

In Coates' name, his parents are named William Paul and Cheryl Lynn. Why did they want to revert to a non-English-sounding given name?

Why not? French Canadians have a weird impulse to tell people of color how they should engage with cultural traditions.

Probably has to do with French-Canadian opposition to CAN multiculturalism, seeing in it English Canada denying our historical importance.

The net result now is that we get is someone like McCullough concern-trolling us in the pages of the Washington Post https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/global-opinions/wp/2017/09/21/for-multicultural-canada-monocultural-quebec-remains-a-tough-challenge/?utm_term=.74efe75e9eff …
