1. This is tangential, but I'm always puzzled by the amount of credit people are willing to give to loser generals like Lee & Rommel.
British built up Rommel to make their own war effort in North Africa look important.

If Hitler had let Rommel move the divisions he wanted to Normandy, the invasion very well might have faltered. Hitler was convinced the real invasion was still to come at Calais, Rommel knew better
