This thread is good, but IMO misses the stronger side of Williams's piece: identity epistemology/ethics. 1/pic.twitter.com/Jl61CW4M5E

Maybe not Coates's fault--but Williams hits on serious problem: dialogue is difficult if knowing/goodness conditional on identity. 2/

I'm no expert on the parts of Williams getting the most criticism, but as a religion scholar I've seen bad effects of "being = knowing". 3/

To me the real identity epistemology here is from centrist writers saying Trumpism isn't about racism but something else (usually economics)

How is that id epistemology? I disagree w/centrists often, but don't see them saying "you can't know X b/c you aren't Y".

As I read them, what Packer/Williams want is a complex narrative, not a mythic binary, & debate where ID doesn't define strength of claims.

"The complex narrative" they want is restoration of progressive, Whig view of history, which itself is the flattest of historical myths.

Can't speak for them, but I want non-apocalyptic history that doesn't star clear heroes and villains. Problem on left and (religious) right.

Again, I don't think that describes Coates at all, whose vision is tragic, not apocalyptic.

Will think about that. Thanks for the dialogue and food for thought.
