Also: since humans are historically embedded beings, there can be no epistemology that doesn't include identity.

This is not relevant to what he meant by identity epistemology.

Well, if it doesn't mean something like that then there is no "identity epistemology" that encompasses both TNC & Richard Spencer.

It means "standpoint epistemology": there is a special problem of you knowing my racial/gender/orientation etc. experience . . .

Thing is "standpoint epistemology" doesn't describe vast majority of TNC's work, which is grounded in scholarship, mainly history & sociology

OK. That part of article cited social media to make a point about (some) current racial justice discourse.

That's what I'm objecting to! Instead of situating TNC with online discourse, he should be placed in context of black intellectual history.

The piece was referring to replies to TNC critic George Packer. Those replies, like much racial justice discussion, now takes place online.

George Packer's response was seriously flawed and much (maybe most) of the criticism it received.

Honest question: you think much of the criticism of Packer was flawed?

I'm sure there were people who went too far -- that always happens in a controversy -- but I didn't like Packer's piece at all.

Sure, but that doesn't contradict key point about identity epistemology. It being wrong does not imply that its targets are all right.

Point about identity epistemology is maybe okay in the abstract but doesn't really apply to TNC's work (as opposed to online debates).
