Just watched ep 6 of Vietnam...just really well done. Still wish someone was blogging the military side of it, though.

AFAIK the current conventional wisdom is correct: A military defeat for the North, but one that exposed the US position as impossible.

Exactly right. One nuance: Ted offensive did lead to crushing of indigenous South Vietnamese revolution but that only empowered the North.

If the purpose of battles is to advance strategic aims of their nations (Clausewitz) Tet was a bold, dramatic, but costly NVA victory

If purpose of battles is to create a favorable pile of bodies it was a crushing US victory. the last 40 yrs showed that's an idiotic view

There were miscalculations on the North's side, particularly about what stubbornness of USA.
