Question: Is this goal (white supremacy) new? Or has it always been the goal of politically engaged whites in the U.S.?

Well, what's new is that you have a substantial number of white people who aren't committed to white supremacy! That's the good news.

But other than that, nothing's changed? So the rise of the alt-right is nothing new, just white people doing what white people do?

Naw. There have been plenty of non-racist & anti-racist non-leftists (Voegelin, many libertarians). I'd like to see more.

I think the Q is whether current left conceptions allow for a conservatism on race issues distinct from white supremacism.

e.g. is anti-immigration sentiment ipso facto white supremacist? skepticism of affirmative action? support for drug war? etc.

If you think a David Duke presidency would be indistinguishable on race from a standard Republican presidency, sure.

If media can endlessly parse Trump (who is not subtle) on "is he a racist" they can do the same for anyone.

It's almost like their entire complaints are that Trump's aesthetics, not policy choices, are horrific.

Didn't Lee Atwater already clarify this issue for everybody?

Don't you think identity and self-identification are significant aspects of how politics works?

I'm not on board with idea that overt, self-identifying white supremacism is the only kind, but dismissing the distinction as "manners"...
