Sure, Chamberlain (like Halifax) wanted to hold on to Empire more than he wanted to oppose Hitler. I reject that policy.

You're making this way too complicated. Chamberlain just misjudged Hitler, period.

I don't think there's any debate among mainstream historians (say D.C. Watt) that anti-communism was a factor in appeasement. Debate is 1/2

So is there supposed to be a lesson here? We're supposed to support Antifa's violence based on your argument about appeasing Hitler?

I wouldn't go that far! I think antifa are wrong-headed, counterproductive pests. But don't like to see them over-inflated as a threat.

Antifa isn't centralized so there is a range of behavior. I do think breaking the cameras of journalists is pest-y:https://newrepublic.com/article/144659/antifa-broke-camera …

If they're not centralized and there's a range of behaviour, then don't make sweeping statements maligning all antifascists.

That's why I framed my core objection in terms of principle: anti-statism isn't effective antifascism because we need stronger rule of law.

That doesn't make a lick of sense. You're disparaging people literally standing up against Nazis in the streets.

I'm disparaging people for thinking that street violence is best answer to contemporary Nazis.

Nobody disputes the right of defense. The controversy is about initiating violence. Read the article I linked to.
