Just look at the Spanish Civil War. The UK was officially non-interventionist, but the elite (e.g. Anthony Eden) greatly preferred Franco.

You're describing Churchill's attitudes but not Tory elite. Remember, in 1940 Halifax wanted to accept Hitler as overlord of Europe.
