3. Kirby was born in the slums of New York, the son of Jewish immigrants from Austria. A depression child he was working out of high school
4. The fledgling comic book industry that Kirby joined was an immigrant affair, organized into sweat-shops.
5. In 1941, Kirby & his partner Joe Simon created Captain America, a allegory for USA (scrawny wimp helped by science to become superpower)
6. During war, Kirby was in 11th infantry under General George Patton, landing in Omaha Beach two months after D-Day.
7. After war Kirby & Simon codified & popularized new genre of Romance Comics, which sold in the millions.pic.twitter.com/Lv50BCokTi
8. Kirby's super-hero loving fans generally ignore the romance comics but there were crucial: they expanded the affective range of comics.
9. In the boom & bust world of comics, Kirby & Simon worked in many genres: romance, western, horror, crime, science fiction, etc.
10. Working in so many genres, Kirby started to mix & match them. The Marvel superhero books are fusion of romance, monster & superheroes
11. Kirby's partnership with Joe Simon broke up after the comic book crack-down led by the Senate. This led him to work for Stan Lee.
12. The partnership with Lee/Marvel was born of necessity, not desire: Kirby had been blackballed by DC because he feud/lawsuit with editor.
13. At Marvel Kirby co-created an immense pantheon of characters: Fantastic Four, Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, X-Men, Black Panther, Avengers, etc.
14. Co-creator doesn't quite get at what Kirby did: he plotted the stories, wrote preliminary dialogue, created character design, etc.
