I know it's Twitter, home of the massive overstatement, but idea that Kirby was as influential a cultural figure as Disney is preposterous.https://twitter.com/HeerJeet/status/898952774112526337 …

Both the Marvel Cinematic Universe & DC Cinematic Universe -- which utterly dominate Hollywood -- have Kirby in their DNA.

They've dominated Hollywood for what, a decade? Disney has been an integral part of global pop culture for 90 years.

Disney literally invented the animated feature film. He invented the theme park. He reshaped multiple generations' idea of fairy tales.

He created a character who was more recognized than Santa Claus, in Mickey Mouse. Why are we even arguing about this?

Mickey is more of a corporate logo these days than a character (when was last MM movie?). People respond to Hulk, Iron Man etc as characters

It's great that you love Kirby – who doesn't? — but James is right. Disney the man and his company shaped and expressed America.
