The memo was pure drek but this isn't the proper response. Firing people for their ideas should be opposed.https://twitter.com/mathewi/status/894734566174404608 …

Since many people are arguing with this tweet (quite cogently too) I wanted to expand on it a little.

The distinction between ideas/actions is blurry but I do think that it's worth judging people by how they behave primarily.

To say that memo by itself isn't fireable doesn't mean there shouldn't be consequences: lots of remedies short of firing available.

Possible remedies include demotion, stripping of any hiring duties, a public memo from Google distancing itself from him, diversity lessons

To me the question is not so much about "market place of ideas" (which is silly) but of employer power. How much power should employers have

Under current system of at will employment, employers (aside from special milieus with tenure or unions) have pretty easy time firing people

One consequence of at will employment is that there is no workplace free speech rights (with few exceptions). That's not a good thing.

It would be a different if this person had posted their manifesto on a personal blog rather that internal distribution on company email.

Send a memo like that around any law firm and it's giving notice. Also, history shows fake race/gender 'science' is not actual science.

This is a simple PR issue. Companies have a right, & corporate obligation, to protect their public image. Firing was only fix possible.
