To be fair, The Shining (book) is a masterpiece and Kubrick changed or ignored virtually every important element and theme from it.

IIRC, Anthony Burgess was pretty annoyed by the lopping off of the last chapter of A Clockwork Orange

He was -- and thought that this altered the meaning of the book. Virtually everyone Kubrick adapted was unhappy with results except Nabokov!

I think part of it too is King doesn't realize how broadly he draws his characters. Kubrick played on that, and the genre's tropes.
