Perhaps we are looking at a series of crises—all rooted in the same larger phenomena—that grow more dangerous at each progression.

As always, one could trace Trumpism far back in time -- to 1960s New Right, to 1920s nativism, to end of Reconstruction, etc. etc.

Useful way to periodize, I think,is to locate problem and then name some pivot points.

Core issue is long battle over expansion of USA democracy that started with Civil Rights movement in 1940s & resistance to that.

If that's core issue then pivot points are 1964 (conservative take-over of GOP), 1968 (Southern strategy), 1994 (Gingrich)

1994 pivot worth dwelling on: start of asymmetric polarization & GOP refusal to accept Dems as legitimate opposition party.

Next pivot was 2008: election of first black president & even greater GOP rejectionism. Leading to where we are here.

When the DNC chose to become the party of the 10% the RNC viewed it as encroachment on their territory. DNC & RNC bolth exclude the 90%. . .

Yep, Reagan is important in all sorts of ways. He also recast racial backlash in a more folksy dogwhistle way
