I think that's right. I'd also say the crisis has become more acute but we've been building toward this since 2009 at least.

1994, 2000, 2007-2010 all inflection points where we could've turned things around but instead crisis increased due partly to chance.

Possible we may look at 2008 to 2016 as something like 1848 to 1860, a period of political disintegration culminating in acute crisis.

Unlike that era, I would argue that Obama was a much better president than Fillmore/Pierce/Buchanan. But overall you might be right.
