      1. I'll admit, I talk too much about the Coen Brothers, but I think I'm not alone in feeling that their stature has grown in recent years.

      2. The stature of the Coens has risen in part because of the very strong run of films they've bade from No Country to Hail, Caesar.

      3. A major complaint by critics (they create grotesque caricatures & despise their characters) now seems falsified by reality itself.

      4. When people say "it feels like we're living in a Coen Bros. movie" what they mean is that seemingly grotesque caricatures actually exist

Except in their greatest movies the characters aren’t caricatures, but absolutely unique- the Dude, Tom Regan, aren’t caricatures

Isn't there a problem with popular criticism being obsessed with the idea that 'realism' is somehow the paramount virtue in movies?

In No Country, the Coens didn't create the "grotesque caricatures", Cormac McCarthy did.

Coen movies are often abt consequences of choices. The good/bad choice is obvious to viewer. So was 2016 election a false choice?
