I think if the issue is "those elitist left wing students on campus" thats really a perennial for about half a century.

I think anti-academic stance is proxy for generation gap. Millennials a lot more liberal on some social issues.

Most liberal cohort of their own gen (baby boomers not retiring from academic jobs) + v liberal millennials = easy target for angry boomers

I think it's a sense of sending kids to the city & they'll be lost. Used to be mostly evangelicals, but now a whole swath of conservatives

Turned into a proxy for a way of life and a way to turn kids leaving rural areas into a bad thing even though becoming successful

Boomers still shell-shocked by the 1970s, even though the Bush Recessions were a bigger clusterfuck, and entirely homemade.

Authoritarians always attack the arts and academia. Attack any vector for new ideas against the group with diminishing power.

I disagree. I think it's classist baiting and also relates to evangelical teachings, cf. vouchers, home schooling. Longstanding resentment.

That sounds plausible until you realize that the hostility is directed towards learning and science tout court, not students or professors.

Could be wrong, but there seems to be an element of envy to it with the Boomers fading and Millennials becoming the New Big Deal Gen too.

Hence all of these stupid articles about "Millennials are killing X" and "All Millennials are spoiled Lena Dunham-types in Brooklyn".
