There was classic American prose throughout the run of Prime Cuts, as a means of positioning comics in the tradition of literature, of Art.

Dougan got into comics I believe via the Aline Kominsky-Crumb editorship of Weirdo, which published a good amount of autobio...
I think Fanta anthologies of period (including Prime Cut) tried to find middle path between RAW & Weirdo, often leading to muddle.
Prime Cuts st least had some editorial specificity behind it... the later Graphic Story Monthly felt like even more
