That's accurate. Wertham's preferred solution was a rating system that would've prevented most comics from being sold to kids (i.e. worse)
i dunno, it seems to have worked well enough for the motion picture industry
Well, among the comics Wertham thought were inappropriate for kids were 1950s Superman/Batman/Wonder Woman -- i.e. very vanilla.
to be fair, wonder woman really was a conspiracy to overthrow the patriarchy so I can see why the establishment would be alarmed
Marston's Wonder Woman, sure. But Wertham was upset at Kanighar's very mild 1950s Wonder Woman (which challenged nothing).
Yeah after Marston left the feminism and bondageness really got toned down.
ah well still. It's important to complicate the notion of Wertham as a giant monster who went on a comics-killing rampage
Hajdu's 10-Cent Plague has the right balance. Wertham was prominent voice but by no means alone.
