Why would you go after voters who would happily vote for Marco Rubio or any "sane" republican, rather then voters who dislike republicans?
Base wants an Econ message, that's what they eat, not a social issues one. Obama campaigns understood that.
I don't think the problem was the presence of social issues, but the lack of emphasis on economic ones as well.
