14/So I fear the mainstreaming of the "America is bad, tear it down" interpretation of American history. I fear its consequences.

15/The "America = Nazis" idea is pushed most vigorously by America's modern Nazis, the alt-right. They love this narrative.

16/The alt-right *wants* everyone to think that Nazism = essential Americanism. That if you hate Nazism, you hate America.

17/By accepting the "America = Nazis" narrative, the center-left allows the alt-right to claim the power of patriotism for their own.

But also you're arguing that if we included some people as true Scotsmen then we'll have bad consequences. That's a bad approach to history.

I don't think "industrial revolution underwritten by slavery" is essentialist. Nor is "Nazis borrowed ideas from USA" Both seem true to me.

I think "underwritten" is an essentializing word. Yeah, Nazis borrowed ideas from U.S., but that's not in dispute (I don't think!).
