But if Trump is imposing "coercive rule" among immigrants, that's sufficient evidence of authoritarian policy (not just intent).

But I have no problem saying that his immigration policy is authoritarian. That's *very* different from claim you and others want to make.

You want to make larger claim re the character of his regime as a whole. To do that, you're forced to fall back on intentions.

Actually, I've cautioned against using model of foreign dictatorships to describe Trump administration:https://newrepublic.com/article/140952/horrible-histories-perils-comparing-trump-stalin-hitler-dictators …

Authoritarian aspirations + authoritarian immigration & policy policy + kleptocracy + personality cult = partial fraying of democracy.

A new benchmark! Not an authoritarian regime! A partially frayed democracy! Which any political scientist would tell you we long were.

And you don't worry that a partially frayed democracy could devolve into authoritarianism?

I'm just noting your ever shifting goalposts of how you evaluate the regime. Can't have an argument w/someone who keeps changing his terms.

Tell you what: Why don't you figure out what you actually think, see if your claim lasts in you a while, then we can talk about it.
